The Second Mountain in Tanzania

Mount Meru 4566 metres (14,979 ft) is Tanzanian’s second highest mountain about 70 kilometres west of Kilimanjaro. Taking only 3 or 4 days to reach the summit accompany by the armed ranger and trained hiking crew. The hikers are likely to experience multiple encounters with different animals, including buffaloes, antelopes, monkeys, giraffes variety of birdsand, with some luck in your pocket, even elephants.

 

The mountain is the centrepiece of Arusha National Park and its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding grassland, supporting a forest that is home to a varied range of wildlife, including approximately 400 bird species, as well as monkeys. As they approach and climb the mountain, hikers will be able to witness a variety of species. To protect the crew from any animal threats, an armed park ranger will be added to the team.

 

From here you start your ascent through Meru’s diverse vegetation zones from montane forest, moorland, semi-desert and alpine desert, until you reach its magnificent crater. The summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge, which provides stunning views of the Ash Cone lying several hundred feet below in the crater, after which you will have time to explore the ash cone that has formed in the crater during the 1910 eruption. In addition to that, Mt Meru has one of the deepest craters – over 1,500 meters!

How to Climb Mount Meru?
You do not need special alpine skills or experience to take part. The ordinary fitness level is ok. Meru trekking does not necessitate any particular equipment; all you need is the ability to comfortably walk up to 10 km/6 miles per day. The hiking difficulty is moderate.

Acclimatization to altitude is important! Your Meru climb will be safe, and successful if you follow these simple guidelines.

  • Hike slowly (recommended pace is two times slower than your ordinary one)
  • Drink much water (3-4 liters per day)
  • Listen to your guide
  • Do not drink alcohol or too much coffee

Everything will be taken care of. A qualified guide is required by TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority) to accompany hikers. The porters and cooks are in charge of your luggage, camp organization, food preparation, and so on.
