The Best Time To Visit Ngorongoro

Any time of year, you can see wildlife on the crater floor. However, there is a better viewing experience during the dry season.

  • June to October: These are the dry season and when the undergrowth has receded, making waterholes and rivers convenient gathering places for animals.
  • November to March: In these seasons, most of the area receives light rainfall and makes the Plain of Ndutu welcome the Serengeti Migration for the calving in the period of February to March
  • April to May: these are the wet season and the only advantages are fewer visitors and accommodation offers the low-season rates

Top Attractions of Ngorongoro Safaris

Ngorongoro Crater:

The famous Ngorongoro Crater covers 260 square kilometers and is 610 meters deep. It was created when a large volcano erupted and collapsed on itself around 2.5 million years ago. The world’s largest inactive and unbroken caldera.

The crater holds global significance due to the concentrated biodiversity and density of globally threatened species. Seven Natural Wonder of Africa, and proclaimed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978

“It is impossible to give a fair description of the size and beauty of the Crater, for there is nothing with which one can compare it. It is one of the Wonders of the World” – By Bernhard Grzimek.

Ngorongoro Animals:

There is a concentration of wildebeest and Zebras inside the crater floor – buffalo, tsessebe, and Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, waterbuck, bushbuck, eland, the population of elephant, while impala and giraffe both of which are common in the crater rim surrounding the plains.

The craters’ lions might be encountered just about anywhere and are generally very relaxed around vehicles – spotted hyena, spotted golden and back-backed jackals, warthog, and hippo. Leopards are resident, particularly in swamp areas, but they are not often seen. Large mammals are abundant all the year-round only in the Ngorongoro Crater.

Black rhinos are found inside the crater floor and are rarely seen in the open grassland. The crater floor offers some great birding – normally hosts Ostrich, Kori bustards, large flocks of flamingos, giving its edge a pinkish tingle when seen from a distance, and many other ground birds.

“The opportunity to see one of the 30 critically endangered black rhino which lives in the crater”

The Maasai Tribe:

The Ngorongoro is the homeland for the Nilotic-speaking Maasai – often regarded to be the archetypal east African pastoralists – their language, called Maa “Maasai means Maa-speakers”.

The Maasai are the monotheists who believe in a single deity with a dualistic nature – the benevolent Engai Narok “Black God” and vengeful Engai Nanyokie “Red God” – They think that Engai, who resides in the volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, made them the rightful owners of all the cattle in the world.

The main diet is a blend of cow’s milk, blood honey, and a mixture of wild plants.

Olduvai Gorge:

The historical site where the Leakey family discovered the remains of early humans, dates back to 1.75 million years.

A long year of searching came in 1959 when Mary Leakey, Louis’s wife, and a more than accomplished archaeologist in her own right discovered a heavy fossilized jawbone that displayed unambiguous human affinities but was also clear unlike any other hominid fossil documented at the time.
